This 1957 Elgin Direct Read, aka the Golf Ball, received a major upgrade, when I was able to find a NOS case with the original crown. In its original condition, the dimple area has a light concentric brushing.

The case number is 9857. It uses the 17 jewel, 717 movement. While not original, this period Speidel band pretty closely mimics it.

Luckily, the digital display works as it should, with the hour remaining center and snapping over to the next when it hits 0 minutes.
