Elgin Caldwell Case 9511 (sold)

Very interesting case design, 10K gold filled with a stainless steel case back.  It uses the 19 jewel, 732 movement.  Factory adjusted.

The dial is divided by horizontal lines.

The original dial was in bad shape.  A lot of wear and radium burn.  The replacement dial is exactly the same, except that it is missing lume markers on the hours.  It seems the watch was part of Elgin’s Nite-Glo series which means the watch hands had radium on the back of the hands to illuminate the dial.

I decided not to redot the dial since it didn’t have the metal inserts, but for the heck of it, I lumed the back of the hands.

Overall, the gold plating is in really nice shape, with only a few very small brassing spots.   The dial, while magnitudes better than the original, isn’t perfect.  Also, I’m waiting a replacement for the crystal which is past its prime.

Gene jockey ID it has the Caldwell from 1956.
