This Lord Elgin has an inscription on the back, dated 1966.  I’ve seen them in an ad from 1963 as well. This obviously gives us a time frame its production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The case number is 2814Y and it is 14K solid gold. \u00a0The bezel top and the top of the lugs are knurled. \u00a0The dial has a linen motif.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The movement is an unadjusted Swiss movement, though at one point Elgin still regulated to their stands. I’m not sure if Elgin at this point still did this. \u00a0The caliber is 884 and it has 25 jewels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The inscription on the back shows that this watch was awarded by the Navy League of the U.S. (it still is in existence) to L. Mendel Rivers.  Rivers was a long serving House member from South Carolina and he actively supported the Navy while in Congress.  From what I can tell, a sub was named after him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He died in 1970.  To be honest, it looks as if the watch was hardly worn over the last 50 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
