A friend came across several Elgins at an estate sale among a box of other watches.\u00a0 I bought all three and this was the best of the bunch.\u00a0 It was dirty and didn’t run, but once I cleaned it up a bit, I sent it off to my watch repair guy and it came back spectacular.<\/p>\n
The dial is perfect.\u00a0 The hands and hour markers look like new and the gold filled case is probably at 93%.\u00a0 It even has the original crown.\u00a0 The only negative, which doesn’t bother me, is that it has an inscription on the back.\u00a0 To me, it reminds me that this watch has some history behind it.<\/p>\n
The watchmaker replaced a broken mainspring, serviced the movement, and polished the case and crystal.\u00a0 I put it on a Speidel band, many because it was the only band I have on hand that fits 16mm lugs.<\/p>\n
The watch measures 29mm across from 10 o’clock to 4 o’clock.\u00a0 By modern stands that is small, but because it is 99% dial, it wears larger on the wrist and it is easy to read.<\/p>\n
The movement in this watch is Elgin’s 30 jewel, American made Durabalance automatic, adjusted to 6 positions.\u00a0 The Durabalance movement dates this watch between 1958 and 1964.<\/p>\n
Update: I added an Airflex center expansion bracelet to the watch to give it a period look.<\/p>\n
